When someone mentions Greece, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Santorini? Blue waters? Ancient ruins? Well, you’d be right. But Greece is so much more. It is a land so deep in culture and history that it would take a lifetime to see and discover it all. It is a land known for its ancient gods, philosophers, language, and the institution of democracy. So, whether you’re a history buff or a beach bum, you’ll find plenty to love.

The Highlights of Athens Itinerary

Acropolis by: Dinos P (CC)

Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athens is a city crammed with history and ruins around every corner. If you only have a few days to spend in the capital, this itinerary will maximize your experience of its culture, history, and architecture. Walk through the mix of modern and ancient, see the remains of the Temple of Zeus, climb to the top of the Acropolis, and enjoy the magnificent view from the awesome Parthenon. Contemplate the ancient past on display at the National Archaeological Museum, with treasures such as the mask of Agamemnon. And I almost forgot the food! No trip to Greece is complete without indulging in some souvlaki or gyros—and you’ll have plenty to try in Athens.

The Cyclades Islands Tour

Sunset over Oia by: Nikola Totuhov (CC)

While most of us would probably love to spend the rest of our lives relaxing on one of the Cyclades Islands’ idyllic beaches, chances of that are slim. However, if you can spare two weeks to explore this paradise, you’re in luck. Start your adventure in Mykonos, famous for its windmills, narrow streets, and whitewashed facades. Make your way through the smaller islands of Naxos and Paros, as well as Koufonissi, my personal favorite. If you want to get away from the crowds, interact with the locals, and see water bluer than your eyes can believe, then this is the place to be. Continue your adventure on the islands of Milos and Ios, before finishing in Santorini. With beaches, plenty of options for adventure, and a magical sunset every evening, there’s no better way to cap off your holiday.

For the young at heart, this itinerary offers plenty of opportunities to experience the magic of the Greek Islands during the day and party your nights away. The islands of Mykonos and Ios are world renowned for their nightlife, and as someone who has experienced them both, I can confirm that they live up to expectations. Party on Super Paradise Beach in Mykonos until the sun rises, and then catch up on some sleep before exploring the sights and repeating it all over again. And with so many clubs and bars on the island of Ios—including the famous Far Out Beach Club—you’ll be spoiled for choice.

The History and Culture Greece Itinerary

Meteora by: Jon Worth (CC)

Greece is known for its ancient history, and there’s certainly no shortage of it. Temples, ruins, and ancient sites dot the landscapes of this country. Explore the ancient edifices within the capital of Athens, then venture west and explore the cities of Mycenae, Nafplion, and Epidaurus—home to an ancient amphitheater with such fantastic acoustics that no speakers are needed there. Continue on north through Greece to the ruins of Delphi, a site known for its mystical energy and history. Finish off your historical tour of Greece by visiting Meteora, a series of monolithic rock formations home to Eastern Orthodox churches and stunning views.
