The list of winners also includes Kaliningrad, snagging the title of TripAdvisor’s Top Emerging Destination for 2020.

According to TripAdvisor, “Emerging Destination winners are all about what’s next–‘ahead of the curve’ places around the world.” The site used review interest and data on users’ saves to come up with the list.

Travelers who visit Kaliningrad encounter a city of philosophy and science.

Once the capital of Prussia, the city known in German as Koningberg had an almost entirely German population until World War II. Following the war, the Soviet Union annexed the city and surrounding province of the same name and populated it with Russians.

Today, Kaliningrad Region and its eponymous capital remain a Russian enclave wedged between Poland, Lithuania, and the Baltic Sea.

As a legacy of its past, modern Kaliningrad boasts a mix of medieval and Soviet architecture and iconic city gates.

History, philosophy, and architecture buffs will find plenty of interesting places to visit, while verdant parks invite visitors to while away a few hours.

Don’t miss Konigsberg Cathedral–inside it, you’ll find the tomb of philosopher Immanuel Kant. Other top choices include Bunker Museum and Brandenburg Gate.

Part of Kaliningrad’s appeal is its proximity to nature and the sea. A day trip to charming old-world towns like Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk reveals seaside promenades and German-influenced architecture. Kurshkaya Kosa is a national park and the Russian side of the World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit, which stretches into neighboring Lithuania.
