Why You Should Take Your Family on Vacation More Often

(And a Few Places Where You Should Take Them)

It’s official, you need a vacation. In case you weren’t already convinced of that fact, Project: Time Off has produced a report on the many benefits a family vacation has for all members of the clan. The coalition of American travel businesses and organizations notes that a vacation not only reduces adults’ stress levels, often leading to better parenting, but can help children feel happier and more secure. A survey used in the report found that eight out of ten children experience some degree of stress in their daily lives, but 77 percent of kids feel no stress when their parents take time off to spend with them. What’s more, a vacation provides opportunities to create good memories and foster positive family relationships.

Family Vacation Ideas

The list of potential family vacation destinations is almost limitless and can be overwhelming. For most kids, however, the destination is irrelevant as long as they’re with you and having fun. While it’s important to consider what kind of activities your children may enjoy, make sure to choose a destination that will enable you to let loose and leave the stresses of the workaday world behind. Whether you get your kicks from relaxing by the water, swinging through the trees, or exploring battle sites, you’re bound to find something in this list that the whole family can enjoy.

The positive effects that spending time outdoors and getting exercise can have on your mental state are well documented. Sharing an active family vacation will help you and your kids reap these benefits and may foster an appreciation for nature among your little ones. America’s rich offering of national parks, such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, provide heaps of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and simply relaxing.

While Alaska can be an expensive destination, nowhere says adventure like America’s final frontier. Begin your vacation in Anchorage, where you can access breathtaking sites like Lake Eklutna and Kincaid Park, and glimpse some of the country’s most impressive wildlife at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Continue your Alaska vacation with a drive up to Seward to explore the Kenai Fjords National Park and marvel at Exit Glacier.

Theme Park Vacations

Despite being loud, busy, and sometimes downright chaotic, a theme park vacation can be a surprisingly relaxing getaway for parents. With a whole host of entertainment options and kid-friendly food joints all in one place, you can look forward to a hassle-free holiday. Ohio’s Cedar Point Amusement Park has been delighting families with its excellent assortment of rides since 1870, while Hersheypark is great for families with older children, boasting 13 thrilling roller coasters.

Sunny Orlando is packed full of amusement parks and makes a great destination for families that want to do the rounds of some of America’s top attractions. Begin with Disney World, encompassing four theme parks and two water parks, before moving on to visit Universal Studios and, if you have little ones, Legoland. Busch Gardens in Tampa is worth the drive, featuring animal encounters, live entertainment, and rides.

American cities teem with family-friendly places to visit, including world-class museums, historical sites, and quirky urban parks. History-rich Boston provides plenty of opportunities to learn together, while San Diego plays host to a legendary zoo, sandy beaches, and the interactive San Diego Air & Space Museum.

The diverse metropolis of San Francisco is an exciting destination for a family getaway. Begin with a trip to Pier 39, where the city’s famous sea lions laze and bark. From the waterfront, you can take a bay cruise and enjoy spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Don’t miss The Exploratorium, a renowned hands-on science center.

It’s hard to be stressed when you’re watching crystal clear waters lap at great expanses of white sand. The beach holiday is a classic for reason, providing opportunities for relaxation and play in equal measure. The United States has some fantastic seaside destinations, but if you’d like to take the family on holiday across the pond, consider Sicily or Mallorca.

In Myrtle Beach, your youngsters can spend hours playing on miles of clean sand and paddling in safe waters. When the sun sets, take a stroll along the boardwalk, stop for an ice cream, and go for a spin on the carousel. In the unlikely event of poor weather, head to Ripley’s Aquarium for shelter.
